Growing Our Creative Industries in the Scottish Highlands

The Scottish Highlands are known for tartan and whisky. Golf and lochs. But what about the c-word? Creativity. Oi! Over here!

We are utterly proud to be a rural business. We’re not quite in the Highland hinterlands – we are based in the sustainable village of Tornagrain, close to Inverness.

Our location is important to us, as we want to support the rural economy – and are best placed to understand the distinct needs and wishes of small businesses and entrepreneurs in the Highlands.

You won’t get that from a big agency in the central belt or in London town, will you?

The Scottish Highlands are a remarkable place to live. We are honoured to base our business here and be part of the rural economy. And we may be little but we have a big vision: to bring and grow the Creative Industries in the Highlands.

In the past few decades, we’ve seen a decline in the working age population, as more people retire early and move to the Highlands, while younger people continue to migrate to urban areas for better jobs.

Traditionally, communities in the Highlands were always engaged in activities on the land and sea: from gamekeeping and fishing to forestry and farming.

For centuries, the Highlanders and Islanders have been guardians of the land and surrounding seas, through low impact and low density crofting and fishing traditions.all businesses and entrepreneurs in the Highlands.

While much of these pastoral activities continue, we’ve also seen a rise in hospitality and tourism, engineering, energy and renewables, life sciences, and food and drink.

It’s not all golf, tartan, and whisky, despite what the tourism board leads you to believe.

The Highlands are expected to be at the forefront of the UK’s Net Zero future, with its prime position to generate and export energy from wind and rain.

Already there are several revolutionary renewable projects, including The Beatrice off the coast of Caithness, which is the fourth largest offshore wind farm in the world, and MeyGen, a world-leader in tidal power.

But what about the creative industries?

Right now, most of Scotland’s advertising, content, and film agencies are centred in the famous Central Belt – namely in the urban areas in and around Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Local whisky, organic beauty, and renewable energy brands alike tend to look south of the Highlands for their storytelling and communications support. We want to change that, with our range of services that’s delivered right on your doorstep.

We hope to nurture and grow local talent, by engaging with local schools and inspiring the next generation to consider a creative career, and eventually become a top local employer.

The day we launched our new website, a young lady who had just graduated with a Masters in Digital Marketing got in touch with us. She didn’t want to have to move from her beloved Isle of Harris. While we weren’t in a position to offer her full time employment, we were able to give her a short paid internship, which included mentoring and helping her identify her talents. She successfully secured an entry-level marketing job with a top brand located within her island community.

We believe that a renewed appreciation for remote working here will help us with our vision of growing the creative industries within the Highlands, which is paramount for our truly remote island communities.
